CYOC 2026 Summer Donation Drive: Youth in Action, Community in Motion

By Ruichen Feng, Donation Drive Leader, Capital Youth Outreach Club (CYOC)

On May 24, 2026, the Capital Youth Outreach Club (CYOC) successfully completed our 2026 Summer Donation Drive at Wootton High School. What began as a simple vision, encouraging youth and families to clean out gently used items and turn them into opportunities for others—grew into a community-wide effort filled with generosity, teamwork, and compassion.

This year’s donation drive exceeded our expectations in every way. More than 45 student volunteers participated in planning, organizing, collecting, sorting, and transporting donations. We also received support from more than 60 families and local small businesses, who generously contributed items and helped spread awareness throughout the community.

Together, our community collected:

  • More than 8,000 clothing items, toys, books and household supplies
  • 125 pairs of shoes
  • More than 50 pairs of eyeglasses

Every item represented much more than a physical donation! it represented care, kindness, and the willingness to help someone else.

Turning Small Actions into Meaningful Impact

The idea behind this project was simple. Many families have items sitting in closets, shelves, garages, or storage spaces that are no longer being used but remain in excellent condition. Instead of allowing these items to go unused or become waste, we wanted to create an opportunity for community members to give them a second life while helping individuals and families in need.

Spring and early summer are often times when families reorganize their homes, making it an ideal opportunity to encourage giving back. We hoped to show young people that community service does not always require large resources or major events. Sometimes meaningful impact begins with small actions: cleaning out a closet, donating an unused pair of shoes, or spending a few hours volunteering.

The response from our community showed us how powerful those small actions can become when people work together.

Strong Partnerships Strengthen Communities

One of the most important elements of this year’s donation drive was our partnership with nonprofit organizations that specialize in distributing resources efficiently to people who need them most.

Our largest collection category included clothing, toys, and household necessities. We were honored to partner with So What Else to ensure these donations reached families and communities throughout the DMV region. CYOC volunteers carefully sorted and packed thousands of donated items according to categories and quality standards. After collection and organization were completed, all clothing, toys, and household supplies were transported to So What Else for community distribution. This partnership allowed our volunteers to see how local organizations work behind the scenes to connect donated resources with real community needs. It also helped us understand that effective service is not only about collecting items, but also about building systems and partnerships that ensure support reaches people efficiently.

We were equally excited to partner with Lift Every Step for our shoe drive. Shoes are often overlooked necessities, yet they have an enormous impact on daily life. Proper footwear can affect health, mobility, school participation, and overall quality of life. Through our partnership with Lift Every Step, we collected 125 pairs of shoes, all of which will be delivered to individuals and communities that need them. Each pair of shoes represents more than just footwear, it may help a child attend school comfortably, support someone commuting to work, or simply provide dignity and comfort in everyday life.

Additionally, our eyeglasses drive collected more than 50 pairs of glasses, including prescription and reading glasses. Access to vision support can significantly affect educational opportunities, workplace performance, and everyday living. We are grateful to everyone who contributed these valuable items.

Youth Leadership in Action

As the leader of this donation drive, one of the most rewarding experiences was watching student volunteers grow throughout the process.

Community service often appears simple from the outside, but organizing a large-scale donation event requires planning and teamwork. Volunteers worked together to:

  • Promote the event throughout schools and communities
  • Coordinate collection schedules
  • Organize donation stations
  • Sort and categorize items
  • Track inventory
  • Load and transport donations
  • Assist partner organizations with logistics

Many volunteers spent hours lifting boxes, organizing materials, greeting donors, and solving unexpected challenges during the event. What stood out most was not just their hard work, but their attitude. Students showed leadership, responsibility, patience, and a willingness to help wherever needed. Many of our younger volunteers also had an opportunity to experience community service in a hands-on way for the first time. They saw how individual contributions become larger collective efforts, and they witnessed the direct connection between volunteer work and positive community impact.

The Meaning Beyond Numbers

Although the numbers from this donation drive are exciting—46 volunteers, over 60 participating families and small businesses, 8,000+ donated items, 125 pairs of shoes, and 50+ glasses—the true impact cannot be measured by numbers alone.

Behind every donation is a story:

A family choosing to give instead of discard.

A child donating toys they once treasured.

A business deciding to support its community.

A student volunteer giving up part of a weekend to serve others.

These acts of kindness create connections that strengthen communities.

Community service is not simply about providing material support; it is also about creating a culture of empathy and responsibility. When young people participate in projects like this, they learn that they have the ability to make meaningful change regardless of age.

Thank You

On behalf of CYOC, I would like to sincerely thank every volunteer, family member, donor, and partner organization who made this event possible. Your generosity and support transformed a local donation drive into a meaningful community effort that will benefit many individuals and families. This project reminded us of an important lesson: when people come together with a shared purpose, even small actions can create lasting impact. As CYOC continues to grow, we hope to continue creating opportunities for youth leadership and community engagement. We look forward to building on this momentum and serving even more communities in the future.

Together, we are not simply donating items, we are sharing hope, strengthening connections, and helping build a more caring community.
