Bridging Heritage and Future: Exploring China Through a 10-Day Summer Camp in Shanghai and Zhejiang

Author: Olivia Li

From July 27th to August 5th, I had the honor of participating in a 10-day summer camp organized by Zhejiang Agriculture and Forestry University, ZUAA-GWDC Foundation, and Capital Youth Outreach Club (CYOC). Nearly 30 students, including myself, were given the incredible opportunity to explore different parts of China. We visited bustling cities like Shanghai and Hangzhou, where swarming streets were filled with vendors, tourists, and the irresistible aroma of fresh food. We also experienced the charm of smaller and more rural areas such as Xiandu and Heyang Ancient House in Jinyun City. For someone like me, who had never been to China before, this was a priceless and memorable chance to connect with the unique culture and lifestyle of my motherland.

Aric Deng CYOC Chinese Cultural Festival Article

Author: Aric Deng

As a person living in a society, communities will always mean a lot to us. Whether its the people who live around you, the people who have the same interests as you, or the people who share the same race as you, they will always be a big part of your life. There’s a reason why the Chinese Cultural Festival in D.C. exists and that’s to bring our talented chinese community together. In a large group, we can further strengthen our own relationships, and we can even make brand new ones! When us CYOC volunteers work, we take the word “community” seriously and we try to help everyone we can so that our community members may have the time of their lives.

Jennifer Zhang AANHPI award

By: Jennifer Zhang

I’m Jennifer, a junior student at Winston Churchill High School. It is a true honor to receive this award Asian American and Native Hawaiians/Pacific Islander (AANHPI). First, I appreciate AANHPI gives me this award. Second, I truly thank the support from Capital Youth Outreach Club, CYOC for short in Montgomery County. Compared with others, my volunteering experience is unique. Before I moved back to the U.S. from Shanghai in the 10th grade, I had limited opportunities to engage in volunteer work. However, I was fortunate enough to join CYOC, which has opened doors for me to join multiple community-based volunteer efforts. At last but not least , I will thank my CYOC partners, the CYOC adult advisors, Dr. Pinglu, Prof. Taochen and Dr. Haoli and my mother as well, for their great support and help. Without them, it’s impossible for me to get this award.

From Yunnan to D.C.: A Journey of Connection

By: Sophia Wang

Over the past few months, I’ve had the wonderful opportunity to participate in Friday meetings with students from Yunnan. Each week, we explored a variety of topics—ranging from school life and family to pets, hobbies, and favorite movies. These conversations gave me a glimpse into what life is like in Yunnan, and I was fascinated by the cultural differences between their everyday experiences and mine here in the United States.
